Garden Planning Basics: Set Goals

The first step to a great harvest is a solid plan with clear goals.

You're growing a garden this year? That's fantastic! I am so excited for you. Dreaming about a garden fills me with hope. Every year is a fresh start, a clean slate. And every single tiny seed has the potential to change your life for the better. You scroll through image after image of stunning gardens that look effortless, and you think, "I can do that!" I'm here to tell you, absolutely you can. There is nothing stopping you from having your dream garden. You just have to make a plan, and I'm here to help!

The first step in achieving that beautiful cornucopia image you've sketched out in your mind is to set goals. You've got goal #1 on lockdown. I want to grow a garden. Check. But let's dig a little deeper. Take time before you open that pile of seed catalogs calling your name and write down your top three garden goals for 2021. Here are my goals:

  1. Save more seeds
  2. Fill my landscape with bouquets
  3. Make lots o' gut-loving pickled goodies

Make sure to write these down somewhere prominent. Read them every time you go to work on your garden plan. Let these simple goals guide the choices and decisions you make, and hopefully, at the end of the season, you'll be rewarded with a garden that looks like the one you imagined in the dead of winter.
